This spruce is native of Japan and Sakhalin (Russian Island) and is very liked for bonsai as it as some of the smallest needles a spruce can produce. The greenish and blueish needles will measure upto half an inch. While not being the most frost tolerant, it is one of the hardiest spruce which makes it a good bonsai candidate for colder climate area of the globe. It is also as common Ezo spruce, Edo spruce or silver fir. The bark is a flaking bark with a red-brown color.
