A new Hardiness map in Canada

by MishoBonsai.com | post a comment

Hardiness map Canada

The Natural ressources ministry of Canada as come to a conclusion that the hardiness map of Canada had to be redesign in light of the recent climate changes. It seems that the climate average temperature as changed for some region and some region have even gain a zone. This means plants and trees that were not easily grown in certain region because of the cold in winter can now be grown with or without protection. Another change in the climate is that the growing season as been extended by a few weeks in certain region. This is a good outcome of the climate, and the only one I know so far. Cold as kill so many of my trees, and if it as not killed it, I suffered die back that put a hold on my bonsai tree effort.

The new map is intended to be designed with the help of the general public. As a gardener, you can go to : http://www.planthardiness.gc.ca and register a free account. Once registered, you will be able to submit your geographical location, and a few infos on each species you want to submit. They will ask you the specie, the numbers of years you are growing this species, if you protect your specie in winter, if it as suffered die back or death etc.... I am very excited and have allready submitted a few of the species I have successfully grown in my region. Even Americans folks can joined and post their results.

Gardening is fun, and another excitement is to push the limits of the zones. It is rewarding to know that you are carefully growing a zone 5 tree in a zone 4 region.

This new map subject was brought to us by a customer which I thank him. It is fun to have interaction with clients.

On my bonsai tree side of things, I have successfully reportted a few of my trees and have also taken cuttings of a few of the species. As of today, all my cuttings are alive and I should have a great season again this year. Regards,
Patrick
