This maple is prefered by bonsai enthusiast because it is a very tolerant maple specie. It is tolerant to various conditions and pollution. It is a great drought-tolerant small tree. It is also known as the Field maple. It is popular for street trees and hedge tree, as it grows compact and not very big compared to certain maple. The leaves are uncommon for a maple as the lobes of its leaves are obtuse. The leaves will turn a yellow golden color in fall. It is also a low branch species which makes it a more suitable bonsai candidate then other species.

Hardy to USDA zone 4 to 8.
